Back to School: School Zones Are Back in Effect Beginning Tuesday, August 4, 2026

The Town of Gramercy reminds residents that St. James Parish Public Schools begin the 2026–2027 school year on Tuesday, August 4, and school zones will be back in effect. (St. James Parish Schools)

Drivers should expect heavier traffic during school zone hours, along with school buses, crossing guards, and students walking or biking to and from school.

School Zone Safety Tips

● Slow down. Obey posted school zone speed limits when active.

● Watch for children. Students may enter roadways unexpectedly.

● Avoid distractions. Put phones away and stay focused.

● Stop for school buses. Louisiana law requires stopping when buses are loading or unloading children, unless otherwise permitted.

● Allow extra time. Traffic may be heavier during the first weeks of school.

● Follow police officers, crossing guards and school staff. They are there to ensure safe crossings and traffic flow.

Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility

The start of school is a busy time as families adjust to new routines. Slowing down and staying alert helps protect children throughout the community.

The Gramercy Police Department will monitor school zones and bus routes to help ensure compliance with traffic laws and maintain a safe environment for students, families, and school staff. School zone speed limits are enforceable when flashing lights are active or during posted hours.
